A lower body lift can be an ideal treatment option for patients who are experiencing an abundance of excess, loose skin resulting from recent weight loss or the natural aging process. This advanced body contouring procedure from our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dana Coberly, MD, can ultimately give the midsection and lower body a more toned and fit appearance, tightening the skin and yielding a firmer look and feel.
What Are the Benefits of a Lower Body Lift?
The many potential benefits of lower body lift surgery include:
- Reduction of loose, inelastic skin that can occur in the midsection and the upper legs due to aging or significant weight loss
- Achievement of firmer, tighter skin in the abdomen, flanks, lower back, buttocks, and thighs
- Enhanced body contours
In addition to these physical improvements, a lower body lift can also boost a patient’s self-esteem and confidence by helping their outward appearance better reflect how they feel.

Who Is a Candidate for a Lower Body Lift?
A good candidate for a lower body lift is often someone who has experienced significant weight loss or natural aging that has left them with loose, sagging skin around the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks. Ideal patients are typically at or near a stable, healthy weight and have maintained that weight for several months. Candidates should be in good overall health, be non-smokers or willing to quit before and after surgery, and have realistic expectations about results and recovery. In most cases, a lower body lift is best suited for individuals who are bothered by excess skin that does not respond to diet or exercise and are seeking a more contoured, proportionate lower body appearance.
Dr. Coberly will meet with you for an initial consultation to determine whether lower body lift surgery is the best option for your needs. Individuals who are planning to lose large amounts of weight in the future, as well as those who plan on having more children, are typically advised to wait on undergoing a lower body lift until they have achieved their goal weight.
If this procedure is right for you, Dr. Coberly can create a customized lower body lift treatment plan designed to meet your expectations.
What Does the Lower Body Lift Procedure Involve?
A lower body lift procedure generally takes about four to eight hours to perform, depending on the extent of treatment. For most patients, the treatment involves a circumferential incision made around the entirety of the waistline. An additional incision will be created around the belly button. Dr. Coberly will tighten the abdominal muscles and eliminate excess skin from the midsection and buttocks. The remaining skin in these areas, as well as the thighs, will be pulled taut for firmer, smoother results. In some cases, liposuction may be part of a lower body lift to address isolated fat pockets and help enhance body contours.
Lower body lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Since this procedure involves major surgery that affects a variety of body areas, some individuals will need to stay in the hospital overnight. There will be noticeable scarring around the midsection that results from this procedure; however, this scar should be easily concealable under clothing.
What Is Recovery from Lower Body Lift Surgery Like?
Most patients will need about four to six weeks of recovery before resuming all of their normal daily activities; however, many individuals are able to return to work in about two to four weeks. Post-operative drains and garments will be necessary during the healing process. Dr. Coberly may prescribe JOURNAVX, a non-opioid pain medication, to help alleviate discomfort.
What Results Can I Expect from a Lower Body Lift?
A lower body lift can create a more toned, lifted, and proportionate appearance of the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks by removing excess skin and tightening underlying tissues. Patients often notice smoother contours, improved body shape, and better-fitting clothing after surgery. Results can be long-lasting when a stable weight and healthy lifestyle are maintained. While some swelling and scarring are part of the healing process, incisions can be carefully placed to be as discreet as possible. As healing progresses, the final results become more visible, helping many patients feel more confident and comfortable with their overall lower body appearance.
Will I Have Scars from a Lower Body Lift?
Yes, a lower body lift does involve incisions, so some scarring is expected. The incision typically extends around the lower torso but is carefully placed to be concealed beneath underwear or swimwear whenever possible. While scars are permanent, they usually fade significantly over time and become less noticeable with proper care. Following Dr. Coberly’s post-operative instructions, such as incision care, sun protection, and recommended scar treatments, can help promote optimal healing and improve the appearance of scars as they mature.
How Much Does a Lower Body Lift Cost?
The cost of a lower body lift can vary widely based on several factors, including the extent of surgery needed, the techniques used, anesthesia and facility fees, and a surgeon’s experience. Additional considerations such as pre-operative testing, post-surgical garments, and follow-up care may also influence overall pricing. Since each procedure is customized to the patient’s anatomy and goals, an in-person consultation is the best way to receive an accurate cost estimate tailored to your specific treatment plan.
We also offer flexible financing options for qualified patients to help ease the cost of care.
